Fremont

Seattle’s quirkiest neighborhood and center of the universe, the self-proclaimed Peoples Republic of Fremont extends from the Ship Canal to N 50th St between Ballard on the west (app. 8th Ave NW) and Wallingford on the east (usually Stone Way), transected by busy Aurora Ave.

Lower Fremont is a vibrant artistic, retail and high tech center with offices for Adobe, Getty Images and Google; the flagship PCC Fremont organic grocery and must-see artistic landmarks such the Troll, Waiting for the Interurban, the Lenin statue and the Rocket.

Upper Fremont has a smaller commercial district along Fremont Ave but is mostly residential with the south entrance to the Woodland Park Zoo an easy walk.

BF Day Elementary is Seattle’s oldest continually operating school and the Fremont Library is a cozy hideout to escape the crowds at the spectacular Summer Solstice Parade.

The 26 bus goes connects Lower Fremont to down town via the Fremont Bridge, the 5 connects Upper Fremont to down town via the Aurora Bridge and the 46 and 44 buses go to the UW, although bikers will prefer the Burke Gilman Trail with direct access to the UW.
